We’re now a week into the Soccer Unites Utah online jersey auction, and folks, this is when it starts getting good. Not only because of the tremendous funds being raised for this important cause, but because those funds are sure to increase as the current auctions end every day… if you’re the type that fast forwards through those TiVo’ed games to get to the last 10 minutes, then this is the time for you! The view from mid-field
Greetings from Tampa once again, and welcome to your daily RSL Camp Recap. For the guys’ first full day in the Sunshine State, well, there wasn’t all that much sunshine to be had at the start, but the soccer gods convinced the weather gods to hold off just long enough for the squad to finish off its nearly two-hour session, the first of many to be held over the next 10 days at the University of South Florida Soccer & Track Stadium - or as it will hence be known as, The USeFeSTS.

It’s Day #6 of the Soccer Unites Utah jersey auction, and today’s pair of shirts are two that can never be reproduced… mostly because their teams have changed identities since these jerseys were last worn! We’re proud to rollout these two “throwback” MLS jerseys - the #10 MetroStars shirt of U.S. Soccer legend and National Soccer Half of Famer Tab Ramos and the #6 Dallas Burn shirt worn - and autographed - by two-time MLS Best XI midfielder Ronnie O’Brien.

Well it’s really only one knee we’re worried about today and that is the one of RSL striker Tino Nunez. Tino had to go under the knife this morning to repair damage to the lateral meniscus in his right knee that has been bothering him for some time. RSL team physician Dr. Andrew Cooper and the fine folks over at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center were able get in and make the necessary repairs without any complications. We expect Tino to be out of action for approximately 4-6 weeks, after which he should be better than ever.
After a solid rookie season in MLS, one which saw him put home a huge game winning goal at home against New England, Tino had a strong start to the 2009 preseason culminating with a two goal performance against Shandong last Friday. However, he had been plagued by some issues with the knee and felt that this was the right time to get things taken care of, before the season really got underway.
We just checked in with him and he seems to be doing quite well, at least for someone who spent the morning in a hospital. He’s already been able to put a bit of weight on the leg and is optimistic that he’ll be back on the pitch in no time. Here’s to hoping that we can get the second year man back for the season opener on March 28 in Seattle.

As Brent Musburger would say, “You’re looking LIIIIIIIIVE, from Tampa, Florida!” That’s right, Behind the Shield has made the trek with Real Salt Lake to the Sunshine State and is stoked, excited, and pumped to give you, the fans, what you want - expansive coverage of the Claret-and-Cobalt as the ‘09 season draws nearer.
So what can you look forward to over the next not-quite-a-fortnight stretch while we’re here in Florida? Firstly, lots of photos featuring sunshine and palm trees (well, at least once we replace the batteries in our camera… the shot overlooking the courtyard from the “BTS Suite” at the team hotel was the only one we could get today!) to make all of you back in Utah insanely jealous.
