Nimo to Portland
RSL announced this afternoon that second year midfielder Alex Nimo has been loaned to the Portland Timbers of the USL-1 for the duration of the 2009 USL season. The 18-year-old Nimo was drafted 17th overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and appeared in 10 of RSL’s 12 MLS Reserve Division matches (notching a team high 4 assists) and 3 exhibition matches with the first team in his rookie campaign.
“With the demise of the MLS Reserve League, we need to find a way to get our young players games to continue their development, and when this opportunity came along for Alex to play with his hometown USL team and a quality organization like the Timbers then we had to seize it,” said General Manager Garth Lagerwey. “Alex is still a teenager, and the best way to unlock his enormous potential is for him to play weekly high-level matches. We will keep a close eye on Alex and monitor his progress throughout the season, and we fully expect him to be part of RSL’s long-term plans.”
We’d like to wish Alex the best over the course of the season. We’ll be keeping a close eye on his progress…

I think it’s a great move. Good luck to Alex returning to his hometown. Hopefully, he’ll lead Portland to a successful season as they transition to an MLS team, than come back here to realize his considerable promise.
Agreed. Smart move. He’s young, let him develop.
I am really excited to see him develop and start getting 1st team minutes in the future. I think he has incredible potential and already is a really good player. Good luck Alex. Hopefully we see you sooner than later.
Great Move - No room for him anyway. I think this means we will make 1 more signing. Striker please!
