Live from Provo! RSL Reserves 3 : 1 BYU Cougars
As Brent Musburger would say, “You’re looking live at Haws Field in Provo!” Well, you’re not really looking live, but you’re at least following live, as we’re recapping the action as it happens from the RSL Reserves first action in Utah in ’08 vs. the BYU Cougars. How live are we? Well, the picture from above is opening kick-off, that’s how live we are! As to not clutter up our front page, click on past the jump to follow along.
5:00 pm: Let’s start with some starting line-ups, shall we?
RSL Reserves Starting XI (4-4-2): GK-Chris Seitz, DF-Tony Beltran, DF-David Horst, DF-Jamison Olave, DF-Dustin Kirby, MF-Matias Cordoba, MF-Kenny Cutler, MF-Carey Talley (Captain), MF-Andy Williams, FW-Yura Movsisyan, FW-Tino Nunez.
BYU Cougars Starting XI (4-4-2): GK-Easton Folster, DF-Daniel Turnbell, DF-Morgan Gilliam, DF-Drew VanWagenen, DF-Richie Bindrup, MF-Steve Magleby, MF-Brent Jensen, MF-Aaron Gabbart, MF-Brit Osborne, FW-Steve Fellows, FW-Garrett Losee.
RSL also has GK Kyle Reynish, DF Nik Besagno, MF Kevin Reiman, FW Robbie Findley and Provo’s own, MF Santiago Castano, on the bench tonight.
Just to set the scene here, a perfect night at Haws Field… about 65 degrees with a decent breeze flowing in from the west. BYU’s regular home of South Field is currently undergoing reservations, but, all being said, not a bad setting to play 90 minutes tonight (See photo on the right for evidence). Now, onto the updates…
6th minute - Andy Williams plays Yura Movsisyan behind the BYU backline, but Cougars ‘keeper Easton Folster stops the ensuing 1-v-1 opportunity.
15th – BYU’s Aaron Gabbart hits a 25-yard shot that smacks the right post and bounds back into play.
16th, 1-0 RSL: After a long ball was played towards the top of the Cougars area, RSL’s Tino Nunez pried the ball loose from Folster and, falling backwards, chipped a shot over the recovering netminder and into goal to give the RSL Reserves that early advantage.
25th - Not much in the last 10 minutes… stay tuned.
28th - Movsisyan appears to get injured after getting knocked down on his way to goal, but no foul is called and Yura’s good to go after a minute or two.
36th - Nunez nearly finds his second, but his low shot from the arc misses a foot wide of the left post.
40th - In the BYU area, Movsisyan tries to poke around the new Cougars ‘keeper, who deflects the ball on the first attempt. When Yura tries again, the same result occurs (with a little more contact this time around by the netminder), as BYU is able to clear from danger.
45th - The Cougars get one last crack at goal in the first half, but after their free kick from 25 yards out on the right flank hits the ground near the penalty spot the chance is cleared out of the way and the halftime whistle sounds.
Halftime - Three subs for RSL… Kyle Reynish takes over in goal for Seitz, Kevin Reiman enters in place of Cutler, and Robbie Findley will get 45 minutes of work up top in place of Movsisyan.
49th, RSL 2-0 - Nunez strikes again for RSL. The rookie played a give-and-go with Matias Cordoba around the arc, and the Argentine playmaker slipped Nunez into space just above the penalty spot, and from there he slipped a low shot just inside the left post to double the advantage to 2-0 RSL Reserves.
51st - Findley takes a run from the midfield stripe into the heart of the BYU area, but he’s finally bodied off the ball before he can get off a shot.
59th - Kenny Cutler heads back into the fray in place of Carey Talley, while Nik Besagno gets into the match in place of Dustin Kirby.
60th - Horst rises up, Deuchar-style, to get his noggin’ on a corner kick, but he sends the shot over the crossbar.
61st, RSL 3-0 - It’s the Tino Nunez show, as the former UCSB Gaucho finishes off his hat trick. Findley beat no less than three defenders to get into the area and find space before slotting to Nunez. The rookie curled a nice shot from 15 yards into the upper right corner to give him a personal 3-0 advantage
65th - Jamison Olave almost gets into the scoring act after a failed clearance in the area, but his 12-yard effort sails high.
66th - Kevin Reiman takes a crack at the far right post, but a BYU defender blocks his effort from 11 yards before it can get on goal.
75th - Young Santiago Castano – the 17-year-old Sueno MLS semi-finalist from Provo – enters the match in place of Andy Williams.
80th - It’s almost Nunez Time again after Cutler deftly chips a pass for him near the spot, but he misses on his lunging attempt for the shot.
83rd RSL 3-1 – BYU gets on the board when an RSL turnover in the final third turns into a cross from the right flank by Steve Magleby that Scott Heaton converts with a left-footed finish.
Final – RSL Reserves 3, BYU Cougars 1. As the clouds/fog/inversion settles in here at the foot of the Wasatch, we conclude another fun-filled night in Provo, which was taken over by the obvious “Man of the Match,” FW Tino Nunez. Congrats to the RSL Reserves and BYU Cougars, who hosted tonight’s match as a fundraiser in an effort to gather new and used cleats that will be donated to children attending soccer clinics during the PDL team’s trip to Fiji in May.
Thanks for joining us and keep in touch with Behind the Shield all week as we continue to update you on everything RSL! Good night.

B Y who?
I’m glad the game was a success!
It was fun to see the reserves in action down in UT County – especially for such a good cause. My family had a chance to talk to Kyle B and Kenny D and congratulate them for the result against DC. Good times close to home!
Hey who is this Santiago Castano guy??? he was pretty good.
