Shocking the World
Though it’s not RSL-related, we’d like to send our congratulations out to the U.S. Men’s National Team after they stunned world #1 Spain 2-0 in the Confederation Cup semifinals this afternoon in South Africa. The victory books a spot in Sunday’s final, the first appearance in the final of a FIFA tournament for this country’s men’s side, against the winner of tomorrow’s Brazil-South Africa match.
It was a complete effort for the American’s with Jozy Altidore (25th minute) and Clint Dempsey (73rd minute) tallying goals, while just about everyone contributed in shutting out the potent (that’s an understatement) Spanish attack. The loss for Spain puts an end to their world-record 15 game winning streak and record-tying 35 game unbeaten run.
For those of you who watched it, you already know, it was an incredibly gutsy and impressive performance from the red, white and blue. And for those of you that didn’t, well, go watch it…
Oh yeah, remember, that’s the same U.S. squad that you’ll be able to see right here at Rio Tinto Stadium in World Cup Qualifying on September 5. You can’t tell us your not excited now!

Will ESPN have a re-broadcast at some time?!?!?
Replay,
We’ve heard that ESPN2 will be airing the game again tonight at 7:00 p.m. MT. Don’t hold us to that though, as we can’t promise it’s accurate…
RSLHQ
Huge result for the U.S.A. Today’s match shocked the soccer world, It would have been hard to find anyone that would have picked the U.S.
Replay will be at 9:00 pm ESPN2.
Replay is at 9pm tonight. The game was incredible. Gutsiest performance I’ve ever seen these guys play.
PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!! BRING ON BRAZIL!!!!
I’ve been excited to see these boys play here for months!
Any word on when tickets will go on sale for the Sept 5 qualifier?
Congrats to Kyle Beckerman on being called up for the Gold Cup!
INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY PLAYED AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
I DIDNT THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE!!!!!!
Too bad the US Sport Establishment and the Mainstream media can not comprehend the dimensions of such win. Newspapers and other media in the rest of the world are stunned by the US win and comments have come and gone since yesterday throughout the world. The reaction from the US public, other than loyal soccer fans, has been incredibly tepid at best. We have a long ways until we see the true conversion of this country to the world’s commanding sport of soccer.
MLS is doing its part. Let’s keep it up with attendance and support for the local team. More wins out of RSL will certainly help with recruiting new converts to the game.
I’m still on cloud nine after that. The US needed a signature win and we have it. Great stuff.
It was simply amazing to see the US take advantage of opportunities and limit their mistakes. I thought the way they played in the first half was inspired, and they withstood a second half barrage by one of the best offensive units in the world. Timmy was impressive, and I have to admit I was very impressed by how the US didn’t buckle or fold when facing a better team. We played well, took advantage of opportunities and responded to the Spain attack.
Well done, bring on Brazil.
Even though the US defended the entire game it was still awesome. I was nervous about the 1-0 score line, but when Dempsey scored I went crazy. I was happy they bucked up from the first two games. The Gold cup I don’t think will go as well based on the squad that has been assembled. We shall see though. I would love to see some new US players step up.
Hopefully we will have another awesome win for the US. All I can say is this is amazing!!
