Headed to the Gold Cup
U.S. Soccer announced this morning that, along with 22 other players, RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman will be representing the U.S. in this year’s Gold Cup tournament. The team is set to gather in Seattle early next week (yes, that means Beckerman available for Saturday’s home match vs. Toronto), with the tournament opener against Grenada set for July 4. Kyle joins RSL teammates Andy Williams (Jamaica), Will Johnson (Canada) and Jean Alexandre (Haiti) on Gold Cup rosters for the 2009 tournament.
Congrats guys. We look forward to what you can do on an international stage.

Kyle Beckerman for the US team?? that is hillarious, I’m not sure he is the best hlolding mid on our team… I like Kyle, I just think he is limited physically, sorry. Did anyone see him whiff on that clearance last week against Houston? Amazing.
Oh BTW, garth reported that Escalada has left the team. That must have been tough for our fearless leader to admit, as Escalada was the lone pickup this offseason. After all those airfares, hotels, transfers, food and entertainment bills that Garth racked up, paid for by Checketts, sponsors and ticket holders; we have the same team as last year, minus a couple good players in Deucher and Dema. He scoured the earth looking for talent, and he achieved nada. Oh wait, we have the draft picks- and they don’t get playing time because they are not good enough or the coaches play favorites??? With our owner paying attention to other business ventures, does he even realize what’s going on? Sadly, this is another subtle, downward step for our beloved franchise.
Wow. A lot of negativity in here. Shame on you all. Great news for Kyle, Will, Andy, and Jean. Playing for your country is an honor and a great experience. Too bad we will be missing 2 starters and a key sub. This will give a great opportunity for some of our other guys though. Losing players to international play is just one of the things all good teams have to go through. Good luck guys!
I’m with Andrew. Congrats guys!
skinny j does make a very good point though.
This offseason JK and Garth told us that Escalada was the guy, they kept him through the entire preseason camp even though he wasnt in shape and wasnt really showing anything, and finally, just to wrap it up, they let him leave. Great job, hope JK and Garth take credit for what will go down as possibly the most disappointing offseason yet.
Congrats to those guys called up. How Beckerman got called up amazes me, but hopefully the US advances and Haiti and Canada dont so we can see Will with Jean back there…
Congrats Kyle, Will, Andy, and Jean! It is always an honor to represent your country. We’ll be cheering on all of you!
Congratulations is deserved here. Good luck and we will eagerly await your return.
Congratulations all!
I’m sure BB just wants to see if there is any MLS talent left. Most ,if not all, of this little camp will be MLS and overseas players who play for crappy teams or aren’t getting any playing time.
It’s not as if Beckerman will be on the actual world cup roster. He’s way too slow. Can you imagine him trying to hold down a robinho/kaka attack? hahahaha. He might ask for an autograph before they blow past him.
duuuuuuuuude. was that……kaka?? that guy like…. flllleewww right past me! awwwesssome dude! hippy movement fo lyfe!!! ehhhyaaaa mannnn. rasta rasta. where did javi go!?
Why?!? Not feeling it.
Oh, I wanted to post my time so we can see how inefficient our moderator’s system is.

jank2, f ur life.
Maybe Kyle hasn’t been quite on form like he has in the seasons past, but I find it pretty funny how quick people here turn on a player. I’ll take Kyle any day and I think he does a great job for us… I won’t negate he has had some pretty obvious mistakes that have cost us this season… but he still is a quality player.
I am baffled by many of the US call ups, but I certainly hope we can hang with this group of players on the field. However, there are a few that I think deserve to be on the US squad regularly (Conrad, Cherundolo, Davies). The Midfield is a little soft, but hopefully someone like Beckerman will step up and play like a crazy man. Interesting! I guess we shall see.
Wow my post was 4.29 on Thursday, June 25.
Just an FYI…Andy is not heading to the Gold Cup after all. As reported on another RSL blog.
That’s great for Kyle and all! Congrats!
SKINNY J>>> is right. Garth loves flippin the bill. I want to see Nunez not Escalada what a disappointing pick up out of shape from DAY 1 and it pisses me off. Garth needs to step his game up. Or new GM time. Adios Miguel
Can Kyle even get ganja in Salt Lake?
