Espindola v Rolfe - Eastern Conference Final 111409 @ CHI

The player personnel moves continue to fly fast and furious for Real Salt Lake, but the latest transaction this time involves locking down one of its own, as the MLS Cup 2009 champs and striker Fabian Espindola agreed today to a contract extension that will keep the wily Argentine a member of the Claret-and-Cobalt through the 2013 season.

The deal with Espindola – who returned to Real Salt Lake in May (on his 24th birthday) after a brief stint in Venezuela – follows on the heels of similar four-year extensions signed by fellow Argentine Javier Morales, Jamison Olave, and Chris Wingert over the last 14 months, keeping in line with the RSL Technical Staff’s oft-stated intention of keeping team’s talented core of players at Rio Tinto Stadium for years to come. After re-acclimating himself to his RSL teammates during the first third of the 2009 season, Espindola would become a regular member of the squad’s first XI, starting 17 of his 22 appearances and notching three goals and assists each. Fabian also saw significant time in each of the Utah side’s four MLS Cup Playoffs appearances, starting both victories over Columbus and playing 48 and 45 minutes against Chicago and Los Angeles, respectively, in helping Zion’s Lions to lift the Cup.
