Time for Some Road Points
They’re off in Columbus as RSL looks to pick up some huge road points against the Crew. Tonight’s RSL starting lineup is as follows:
GK - Nick Rimando; DF - Chris Wingert, Nat Borchers, Jamison Olave, Robbie Russell; MF - Yura Movsisyan, Kyle Beckerman, Kenny Cutler, Javier Morales, Robbie Findley; FW - Kenny Deuchar
As you can see, they’re listed in a 4-5-1 with Kenny playing alone up-top. However, with both Robbie and Yura playing out wide, they could just as easily push up into a 4-3-3. It’ll be interesting to see how RSL plays this one offensively.
11th minute: Ten minutes in and it’s been Columbus that’s controlled the flow so far. They’ve yet to create any really dangerous chances, but they’ve had the majority of the possession. One thing to watch is the return of Jamison Olave, as he has already asserted himself physically and earned a caution from the official.
24th minute: Well the Crew finally created a dangerous chance… and they capitalized. After a foul just outside of the RSL penalty area, Guillermo Barros Schelotto fires a perfect ball far post and Chad Marshall nodded home for the 1-0 lead.
26th minute: Now it’s Schelotto’s turn as he doubles the Columbus lead. A defensive break down in the area and Borchers takes down the Crew attacker, only to see the official point to the spot. The Argentine playmaker, Schelotto steps up and coolly slots home past Rimando for the 2-0 Crew lead. RSL needs to turn things around very quickly if it wants to earn some points here.
40th minute: Real’s looked considerably better the last 15 minutes looking fairly dangerous on occasion. At this point however it’s goals, not chances, that we need to see from RSL and, so far, those goals haven’t come. Let’s see if they can capture some momentum and close the first half on a high note.
Halftime: And they nearly did it. RSL pushed forward to close the half and nearly got one back when Findley made a great run into the right side of the Crew box. Robbie’s cross ricocheted to Deuchar, who laid off for an onrushing Kenny Cutler and the RSL original’s one-touch shot missed the lower left corner by mere inches. If the boys in white can come out in the second like they ended the first, anything could happen…
52nd minute: RSL has been pushing hard to start the second stanza. Andy Williams, who came on at the break for Deuchar, made his presence felt immediately, finding a leaping Movsisyan at the top of the six, only for Yura strike to go inches wide. Columbus has had its chances as well, but they’ve yet to test the Real goal in the second half.
57th minute: And Columbus seemingly puts this one away. Eddie Gaven makes a streaking run down the right flank and his ball across the box finds Brad Evans, who snuck between a pair of RSL defenders, to easily nod home past Rimando.
63th minute: In an effort to spice up this RSL attack, Head Coach Jason Kreis makes his second substitution of the match, replacing Movsisyan with Argentine striker Fabian Espindola.
73rd minute: Things just aren’t happening for RSL tonight. In the last few minutes a pair of Bomma strikes go begging. Kreis just made his final move, inserting Clint Mathis in favor of Kenny Cutler in the midfield.
End of Match: We’ve come to the end of a tough, tough match for RSL and its fans. Everything just seemed a bit off tonight, from the offense, through the midfield, and to the defense. There’s no time to dwell however, as it’s a short week for Real, with the second matchup of the season against their Rocky Mountain rivals the Colorado Rapids. They’ll look to turn it around on Friday night at Rice-Eccles. We’re out for the night, but we’ll be back tomorrow with some updates from the squad.

OK, I’m can’t take this anymore. I’m signing off in the 60th minute. This is the poorest effort I have seen this year, more like the “efforts” of years past. No energy from anyone. Everyone stunk. No control in the midfied. Terrible marking on defense. Findley up to his old tricks of having a first touch of a rhinocerous. What a joke. The team should be ashamed of themselves. I guess being in first place for so long went to their head.
Let me be the first to say THIS week, though I’m sure I won’t be the last: Cutler is the king of worthless. No offense, no defense, no nothing. Just a bobble head.
I am not sold on Robbie Russell either. He is always suspiciously close to the unmarked goal scorers.
Where is Dema, where is Joy, where is Espindola?
So very disappointing. Good to see Espindola off the bench. He’s gotta start if he’s fit.
Hey I just wanted to say that whatever the team is doing I think it is working!!!!!!! Keep it up!
RSL didn’t even look like they care what happens! Amen on the previous comments! It is not a good thing when people are posting comments DURING the game! I have a new idea! Lets get a chat room going during the game. Everyone grab a laptop and when can be miserable together. We can even get Kries involved since he is obviously not busy doing other things during the game. Then at half time we can chat with the players when they go into the locker room. They apparently aren’t doing anything else during halftime like making corrections or growing a set!
that stinks i didn’t see the game but man. a 2-0 lose stinks we need to win on friday no tie lets go for the win!!!!!!!!!!
I think my high school soccer team could have beat RSL tonight! They only way they could get worse is if we gave them wheelchairs to roll around the field on.
Rob, I really used to hate your posts, but that’s pretty funny.
A chat room would be fun for away games. Do people still “chat” on line? How y2k.
They looked out of this world, literally. Lame!
Yes, CW alot of people hate my posts! I am not really tolerant with people who put no effort into their job! For crying out loud! I would love to make money to play a game. Fans need not be so tolerant of crap like what we see frequently from RSL. So lets let them hear it when they suck, and let them get recognition when they play well. Tonight THEY SUCKED!
One of my posts did not make it on here. Of all the comments I figured the one that would get pulled would be the one about them growing a set! Whatever, the one that got yanked didn’t even have anything worthy of disallowing (classic soccer term).
Who is moderating these things? Whoever it is please print this page out and go hand it to Kries to read to the team! Let them know I appreciate their efforts tonight. Also let the FO know we appreciate them jacking the prices again to watch a crappy team!
7 year old AYSO Pack Ball. Not one single player for Crew should be able to out jump Olave for a header! His worst game ever he didn’t even get off the plane. Kreis does not have this team on the same page. Did Timoteo call this, “an effort”?
Best R.
Sad to say that I didnt see the game again thanks to crappy reception from KSL Comcast 105. What a joke! Can we please get back on a real TV station soon.
Looks like Kovalenko, Beltran, and Joy are much more important then we previously thought. Looks like the Red-Headed Wonderkid shined today!
Really, did anyone honestly think we had a chance against Houston AND Columbus on the road. Thankfully, our schedule will go in our favor for the next stretch. We have some BIG games coming up with LA and NY on the road and Colorado, Chivas, Dallas, and NY at home. Thankfully, the Western conference faltered this week and we will have only a 1 pt lead in 2nd place. So basically what matters is how we do down the stretch!
Less Cutler more Espindola. I understand that Dema wasn’t well enough to play today, but someone has got to be better than Cutler in that position.
On a positive note, the team that was on the field after the substitutions were made was a completely different team than the one that started. In a better way. They played good defense, controlled the ball, and created scoring chances. And with Dema in there instead of Mathis, it would have been even better. I hope we learned something tonight.
That game was horrible!!!!
One note: Mathis played better than last week. At this rate of improvement, I predict an assist or goal next week against the C.Rapids.
Horrible effort, I really don’t mind the loss I just can’t stand the lackluster performance. KSL 105 is horrible, the channel freezes up constantly I had to turn it off and listen to the mess.
all i have to say is that if we don’t win at home Friday…then we are out. this week i think the guys need to step up and try to have confidence and know, and start proving to people that the first place spot we were in wasn’t just luck!!! come on men! let’s prove them wrong and bounce back with a 3-0 win!!!!
So much for our vaunted defense. 7 goals conceded in 2 games.
Su-uck!
This game was a disaster. Please, please Dema Joy and Beltran get better! We need you. Cutler is awful, again. But this is no surprise–he always is. And Mathis…why? We all asked “why” when we heard the news two weeks ago…and were still asking it today.
Re Every critical comment above: I couldnt agree more. RSL, you sucked this one up! Sucked it up bad. You let us fans down.
PS I am so sick of saying that “we learned something tonight”, quit learning and APPLY!
PSS KSL 105 Sucks. Sign a contract with a broadcaster that cares.
The game was horrible to watch. I watched it on the 105 channel with my friend, and i must say i got better reception the week before, on ksl 5.3. The digital station don’t know if that will help anyone out at all.
Also is sturgis out for the rest of the season???
Don’t know if anyone else has this same issue, but I was forced to watch the game on channel 105 (which was crap reception, but the way the team played, I didn’t want to watch much anyway). I used to have 5.3 which is a much nicer picture, but as of a week or so ago, it’s not coming in anymore. Very disappointed.
Anyway, did that 3 week hiatus just totally mess up our entire team?! 3 weeks off, then when we do come back we play 1 game without Olave and our back-line completely forgets how to play! Of course it wouldn’t hurt if our midfield could hold onto a ball for more than 5 seconds. Sorry to offend anyone but Beckerman has not been playing well at all lately. Maybe it’s time to let him sit a few minutes to think about what he needs to do to get back into the game. Give the captain’s band to Javi or something.
Let’s at least keep the Rocky Mountain Cup. Make a statement this Friday, RSL!
RSL Fans: Direct Kick is the way to view all MLS games.

“The best way out is always through.”
I believe we will get THROUGH this…
Go RSL………………….
I’m not sure why I feel this way, but as difficult as the last two losses have been we are still in 2nd place in the west. It is by a slim margin, but nevertheless we still have games to play and opportunity to improve. With that said this next week is a very important game against the much-hated Rapids. It will be interesting to see how our team turns it around.
