Yura Not Kidding! RSL Wins 1-0 over Tigres (Updated w/ video)
It was a strong night from RSL last night. Don’t take our word for it though, check out what Jason had to say about his squad after the match…
We apologize for being unable to live blog per usual during tonight’s friendly against Mexico’s U.A.N.L. Tigres, but here’s the good news - it was indeed an RSL win. Yura Movsisyan carried over the momentum from his brace in Reserve Division play over the weekend to put home an Alex Nimo corner kick in the 18th minute, and that would count as all the scoring in a 1-0 RSL win, its first in three tries on The Hill against foreign competition this season.
It was the home side carrying the play for most of the contest, especially in the first half when a mix of starters (Beckerman, Olave, Wingert & Findley), newcomers (Johnson, Mathis & Russell), and reservists (Seitz, Horst, Nimo & Movsisyan) blended well and was able to hold possession for long stretches and enjoy the better of the attacking play, outshooting the visitors 9-4 in the first 45 minutes. The second 45 was a more even affair, but still Seitz was forced into only two saves on the evening en route to the clean sheet. good game. impressed, i must say for the reserves
KALL 700 am covers all the games. Bill Riley should go back to announcing kids T-Ball. That’s how much energy he gives to the game. Where is the ball, who has possession, was it a good touch, who;s running, Make the game come alive with a real play-by-play. “Going, going, gone”, are the words I would like to hear about this broadcaster.
Way to go Yura! It was a great game and the team played really well, especially in the first half. Also, welcome back Chris Seitz!
Keep it up RSL!!!
Good game. I thought the first half mix looked pretty good by moving the ball around, and looking in control. Definitely died down in the second half.
Yura just can’t seem to score to save his life. He got the only goal of the game, but missed on a penalty. Also, he found himself in great spaces, but just couldn’t find the final touch past the keeper.
Findley had a couple of great runs, but I think the Tigres players upped him in that department. It was fun to see some of the great footwork and ball handling skills on the field.
More of the same from these “friendlies”, a seemingly fruitless exercise other than to get some scrubs some PT. The main thing the front office can learn? Get some Mexicans on the team! They are talented players who play with flair and precision. Also, they tend to attract numerous latino fans who are loud, boisterous, knowledgable and loyal. Can you imagine a Chivas home game where we have more RSL fans than Chivas?
On another note, I thought Cletus was excellent with his passing, made several passes that created a real threat for the Tigres back line. In fact, if Espindola would have been playing, he would have finished at least one that Findley instead chose to fire at the keeper’s hands chest high.
And David Horst is a horse on the back line. He saved our bacon in the second half, and was head and shoulders above the players on the field in the JV-filled 2nd half. He would easily be a starter on most teams. You would think that RSL would try to take some of our good assets (Rimando, Dema, Beckerman..) and try to trade for a top flight scoring forward or winger. We have the depth at these positions, and younger, and we need a scorer other than Espindola.
I agree with Robo 55. Bill Riley as an announcer is a joke. He barely pretends that he cares about RSL when all he really cares about is UU Football. His broadcasts of games are terrible, he doesn’t know how to describe the action concisely but fully. Get rid of him.
I was really impressed with the first have. Good, solid play from everyone involved.
The second half, however, was some of the most boring football I’ve ever watched. A bunch of players who are so far down the roster they don’t even have names on their jerseys kicking the ball back and forth poorly.
My question is, how can the FO possibly justify charging $30-60 for tickets to crap like that? Why am I paying twice as much to watch a boring reserve game against a team I could care less about? I could see if it was Real Madrid or even Everton or Boca Jr’s, but the Tigres? Come on. Even the Latino fans in Utah who gave the Santos game its solid turnout (and who come out to see Blanco every time we play Chicago) didn’t care enough to show up. Attendance was 5,000 at best, hence the RCB’s “Bulls**t” chant when the official figure of 10,000 was announced.
Tickets to that game should have been $5-10. The FO is just trying to make a quick buck off those who care enough to show up every time, even to an exhibition match, even when it’s in the middle of the week.
I’ve been impressed with the FO this year for the most part. They seem to be making a real effort to work with the fans and supporters’ groups, much more so than they have in years past. But with this game and with the Santos game, they’re rewarding the dedication of supporters with ridiculously overpriced tickets to what is essentially a reserve match (the second half at least). It needs to stop.
Lurpy, you said exactly what I logged on to post. Don’t get me wrong. I think Kreis played this just right. No reason to risk injury or tire everyone out for a meaningless mid week game when we have LA in 3 days. But call it what it is (a reserve match) and charge accordingly. Like a fool I brought a co-worker in from California (he is Mexican) thinking this would be a good introduction to MLS. It was embarrassing. That second half was really sad. I was hoping Tigres would score just to liven things up. And, it is shameful to run those two guys out with no name. Is this a punishment? Hey “30″ and “31″, head on over to your local sporting goods store and have them slap your initials on those shirts for you…or are those just loaner shirts you can’t take from the stadium?
I have not been to a international match that I actually enjoyed, except Real Madrid. Hence, i decided to sit this one out and use my game A ticket to trade for a chivas ticket. From the sounds of it I made the right decision. Can I also trade in my Real Madrid tickets and get another?
Does anyone know who #30 was? An Argentinian trialist maybe?
