End of One Streak… Beginning of Another?
Well, these Lumpys watch parties have been a good place to gather and watch matches, but they certainly have killed our blogging efforts. For the second straight trip we were unable to get any connection and get our live-blog on. It’s unfortunate too, because this week’s game may have been the most exciting of the season.
In a must-win match to keep pace in the chase for the playoffs RSL brought the fireworks tonight. It all started in the third minute when Javi dropped a beautiful long ball to a streaking Yura Movsisyan. The young striker pulled the ball in, faked a right footed shot, pulled the ball to his left, and buried it past a diving Joe Cannon for a 1-0 RSL lead.
The red-hot San Jose Earthquakes (riding a 9-match unbeaten streak to the middle of the playoff hunt) had something to say, however, as midseason acquisition Darren Huckerby found himself behind the Real defense and alone on goal. Huckerby made no mistake as he slipped the ball past a sliding Nick Rimando to level the score.
The rest of the first half saw each team squander some good chances and they headed to the break level.
The start of the second stanza looked like things were going to follow the same script as too many other road matches this season. Just two minutes after the break, on a quick counter-attack, Huckerby found himself at the top of the area and the talented winger fired a low shot past a diving Rimando to give his team a big 2-1 lead.
This is where things took a different turn for the guys in white. Before the streamers could even hit the pitch, Kyle Beckerman found Yura behind the defense once again and, after pulling the ball down off his chest, Yura showed his form and took a perfect touch before Cannon could get there. The resulting goal leveled the score once again and seemed to spark some life into the RSL attack.
As the offenses went back-and-forth it was RSL who found the next big chance when midfielder Robbie Russell was taken out just outside the Earthquakes’ penalty area. Up stepped Javier Morales and the newly resigned RSL playmaker showed his worth, slipping a beautiful free kick just over the wall and past Cannon to give Real the big road lead.
After the Javi tally, all RSL needed to do was stave off the last of the San Jose attack to pick up their first road victory in several months. Well, they were up to the task and as Nick Rimando collapsed on the final chance, the whistle blew and RSL had pumped new life into their playoff chase.

Great Match!!! Yura was fantastic and Moralas had a beautiful goal to give RSL the lead, but Ian Joy may have lit the candle that resulted in a fighting attitude this team has not shown in a while. With other western teams starting to win consistantly RSL will need to keep this form and continue to get some more wins. Playoffs are still in site!!!
Fantastic win for us tonight. It’s too bad that all of the teams we needed to lose did not. We’re still on the outside looking in. David Horst is really going to have to step up next week against New England.
I sure wish I could have watched this one…somewhere other than Lumpys. I missed a great game. Oh well-way to go guys! Keep your fight on…and IAN…keep on the boys, it worked.
Congrats Sisi! You were on fire!
Great win for the team. It’s interesting that our traditional strong point, our central defense seems to be having trouble lately while our traditional weak point, Yura and other goal scorers, seem to be coming on. We’re going to need both hitting on all cylinders down the stretch to make it to the playoffs.
Some observations:
Again, Mathis was a total non-factor. He should have been subbed out sooner.
Beautiful balls over the top by Javi and Beckerman led to goals. Still weak on making meaninful last passes within attacking third.
Magnificant free kick by Javi. Glad to see he has his touch back.
Pathetic (comical) attempts by Deuchar and Findley to try to waste time with the ball in the corner. They both lost it within 2 seconds. They both need work on their foot skills!!!
Andy W. did a great job coming in for Javi and keeping and distributing the ball.
Our distribution through the midfield and maintaining possession was weak.
The midfielders did a bad job of changing the point of attack, trying to ram it through crowded spaces (like earlier in the season).
Yura is really coming on. He is starting to pick his head up and see passes more (still could be better). His goals were clinical finishing, classy. He did miss another break away that he should have buried, but at only age 21 these are things he will continue to improve on. It could be interesting next year if he continues to progress and the FO can find a true target forward who can pass and SCORE goals. Deuchar is just not good enough with the ball at his feet to be that guy.
Overall, they gutted out a win, and that’s a big step forward!!
Don’t you see? We talk smack on kyle for not doing anything, he reads the posts and then finally plays his game. Well done, Kyle!
Nice Job RSL!!!! Way to get it done on the road. Movsisyan was awesome….Mathis not so much. Can’t wait for the new stadium.
That game was amazing!
Oh, and I hope Movsisyan can keep it up. He looked fantastic. Both of those goals were great.
Gut check time. Good win.
Play-offs… just do it!
Thanks for showing poise, Yura! Both of those goals were very nice!!
And that was a frickin’ SWEET free kick from Javi!
Nice job, boys! Keep up the good work!
Go RSL!!
Happy!!!!! Happy Happy!!
Awesome win, we just need to figure out a way to stay consistant in our play. If we come out like this and fight every night we will get in the playoffs. I thought Huckerby was quite impressive for the Quakes. I wonder if Will Johnson was put into an attacking position similiar to how San Jose used Huckerby if it would be affective. Will has similiar attacking style and the speed to beat anyone. Just a thought.
Is it just me or is Andrew crazy on the RSL being outside right now. If the playoff started today we would be in, right? We would take up one of the wild card spots. Anyway, they need to just keep winning and they’ll be good! Good win! Andy probably should have been in and not Mathis. Whatever, they won!
My bad. Didn’t take in account that DC United played on Sunday (and got 0 points thanks to FC Dallas)
Rob Stinks is correct. If the playoffs started today, RSL would be the #8 team, currently 1 point (34 vs. 33) ahead of both DC United and FC Dallas. Hopefully RSL can keep winning and make it in as a higher seeded team.
Movsisyan, those were two great finishes! Quality. Keep that up, and you may be the finisher we’ve been looking for. (And I may have to take back some of the bad things I’ve said about your play)
I’ll admit, i was doubtful. When I saw Movsisyan’s was starting I thought it would be much like the Chivas match, good chances with misplaced shots. I was wrong. Both goals were perfect. Please be consistent from here on out.
And Javi! What a free kick! Way to come through clutch and put one in.
Did anyone else appreciate Beckerman’s service on Movsisyan’s last goal. Awesome.
I like the idea with Johnson, but the one chance he did seem to have in Saturday’s game, he sorta botched. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the kid and I think we should give him a try in an attacking role.
It feels good to get a win, yeah it was San Jose, but it still feels good.
AJ, that is nice and all that you’ve become a new Movsisyan fan, but he only has 3 goals for the entire season, 2 of them were last night. I really doubt he is the finisher we are looking for. Maybe if he had more experience. But as of now we don’t have a good finsher. Remember how we were in first place and everybody said we were in the playoffs for sure and now everybody is saying we won’t make it in for sure? It’s funny how fans flip flop almost every game depending on how they performed. I still think we can make into the playoffs. We sure are going to have to work hard though! Our next game is against New England on their turf, that is going to be a tough game. Our home opener against New York won’t be as easy either. Basically, we don’t have an easy schedule for the rest of the season. But, with the consistancy of RSL, who knows what will happen… We’re talking about a team that can crush New England one week and then lose to San Jose the next. Doesn’t make sense! Oh well, I hope we make it to the playoffs. We need it this year….
Oog,
i did say “MAY be the finisher we’ve been looking for” (cause i have my doubts)
i did say “i MAY have to take back some of the bad things I’ve said about your play” (again, my doubts)
i am an RSL fan, and as long as he plays for us, i am a Movsisyan fan. and as a fan, i will capitalize on my right to criticize and praise the way i see it. for movsisyan, he has had his time to suck, plenty of people have defended him with “hes young, give him time”, and hes had a great game to build off. if hes gonna amount to anything, then now is the time to do it. its time to stand up, and stay standing, and quit it with these on-again, off-again weeks. (i hope you are reading these forums Movsisyan, we expect more of last Saturday and less of the Chivas disaster)
criticize a player when he does poorly; that same player deserves praise and respect when he performs. maybe i should tone it down, lest i be called a flip-flop fan?
The NE game is a tough game on the road, they are coming off a home loss with something to prove, and RSL is an historically inconsistent team. i wish there were a way to predict what RSL team will show. is it the guys with the drive to gut out a road win? or the guys who dont seem to care about a post season?
our next four games are crucial. too many people planned on us beating Chivas at home. we got too comfortable and thought, “hey were at home, were great at home, its a win”. wrong. personally, i am worried about our stadium opener. NY is a good team, they should want to prove they can win without questionable calls, plus we haven’t actually played a match at home on that pitch. who really knows what will happen, but i know what i want.
i will say this, if movsisyan is who kreis is picking to put goals on the board, then he best do it. if he doesnt in the next four games, then he deserves the door. there is no more time left for good games and bad games. if its not all good games from here out, then the same judgment might need to fall on coach kreis as well.
Its that simple….
Findley on artificial turf.
Movsissyan on natural grass.
Does anyone else see this correlation?
Its that simple!
