Some Big-Time Awards
It’s the time of year when awards are flying around in the soccer world and Real Salt Lake has both a player and coach up for some major recognition right now.
Following a stellar 10-year MLS career that saw him named to the League’s Best XI 5 times and named the league’s Defender of the Year twice (1999 and 2004) Assistant Coach Robin Fraser is a finalist to named to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. The durable and cerebral Fraser, now in his second season as an assistant on the RSL sideline, started in 256 of his 260 MLS regular season appearances and in all 30 MLS Cup Playoff contests he took part in. Congratulations Robin, we look forward to seeing you inducted to the Hall…
On top of Robin’s nod, RSL has a player up for a pretty cool award as well. Fan voting has determined the top 10 “semifinalists” for the 2008 Sierra Mist Goal of the Year, and the people have deemed Real Salt Lake midfielder Will Johnson’s spectacular full volley from RSL’s 3-1 win over FC Dallas on Oct. 18 worthy of continuing on in the election process. Fans may continue to vote online at www.MLSnet.com to determine the best goal of the 2008 regular season. Voting started Thursday, Oct. 30, with fans able to select from 35 regular-season goals, which included the 31 winners of the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week and four additional nominees. Fan voting from Nov. 6-12 will whittle down the 10 semifinalists to five finalists, which will be voted on from Nov. 13-18 to determine the Sierra Mist Goal of the Year, to be announced by the League on Nov. 19.

Congrats guys. Keep voting for Will! That would be an awesome honor for the new guy.
Sounds like a chewed up field with funny lines for our home conference championship game next weekend…
Congratulations Will!
Thanks! Nice post.
