Let the Fireworks Begin!!!
MLS officially released the 2009 Regular Season schedule this morning and, of course, with it came the RSL schedule. We’ll touch on a few of the highlights below, but feel free to check out the full, 30 game schedule right here…
- March 28 @ Seattle – RSL kicks off its campaign in the Sounders’ second ever match at Qwest Field
- April 2 vs Columbus – The 2009 home opener will be this nationally televised ESPN2 affair against the Supporter’s Shield and MLS Cup holders
- May 2 @ Colorado – The Rocky Mountain Cup part V kicks off with RSL headed to Denver for an early season rivalry clash
- May 6 vs Los Angeles – The Galaxy roll into town to kick off a celebratory week that will include Rio Tinto Stadium’s first concert with the Eagles on May 9
- June 6 vs Colorado – The Rapids come to town for their first ever trip to the (un)friendly confines of Rio Tinto Stadium
- July 29 – The 2009 MLS All-Star game hits Salt Lake City in what will certainly be one of the most exciting events of the year
- September 12 vs Chicago – Cuauhtemoc Blanco and co. head to Utah as the playoff push really starts to heat up
- October 14 vs New York – RSL looks to avenge its Western Conference Final loss to the Red Bulls in another ESPN2 showdown
- October 24 vs Colorado – After closing the regular season with a Rocky Mountain Cup decider at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for two straight year, the script is flipped and RSL hosts the final clash. Will the drama in 2009 live up to that of the past two years? Only time will tell…
What do you think of the schedule? What games are you really excited for? Hit back below…

Seattle for the season opener. Lets get a bus!
ROAD TRIP!!! Seattle! We have got to make this one work!
WOO HOO!!! The rapids game is 3 days before my birthday! Can’t wait for that one for sure!
oh and any word yet on who the MLS All-Stars are playing in the AS Game?
i already know of 7 people who want to go to Seattle. car, plane whatever (except a bus). the FO should do something, like set up a ticket package. not a bus though…im seriously not going on a bus.
I’m just excited for the season to start! can’t wait to watch them all!!!
This is a horrible schedule, RSL got bent over. May sees RSL have to play 3 league matches in 7 days, even worse two of them on the road. RSL has two months where they are forced to play 6 matches, then at the end of the season are forced into a two week gap between action in September, and a 10 and 11 day gap between matches in October.
Not sure who from RSL approved this horrible schedule but screwing the team just to get home matches on the 4th and 24th of July are not worth the price we are going to pay.
When do tickets go on sale for the All-Star game, and when will they announce the other team?
Also, is there any word on if a local station will be picking up the away games (and not on a 5.3 channel)???
wow! i didnt look at the schedule very carefully the first time. i totally agree with denz. we got screwed. hard.
twice during our season we play three league games in a 7 day span. may 5-9 AND august 23-29.
and we have a 20 day break from end of Sept. to mid Oct. right at the end of the season. again!
if there really is an approval from the RSL FO then you guys blew this one.
That will be the best birthday present ever, beating colorado at home for the last regular season game. Hopefully the win keeps them out of the playoffs for a third straight year!
Know what games i loved? The ones where Fabi played…
…all RSL regular seasom matches shall be streamed live on the soon-to-be-relaunched RSLFM.com
This is honestly a horrible schedule. I don’t envy the person or people who have to put all this together, but surely they could have given us something!
There are so many long breaks without home games and four breaks without a game for ten days or more. I haven’t looked that closely at other teams schedules, but this seems ridiculous to me. Why expand the season when you are just going to have huge gaps like this?!
The week of August 23rd is going to be killer for the team. Away on Sunday, home on Wednesday, away on Saturday, and both away games are back east. Couldn’t we have taken one of these games and put it in another week?
On a positive note, the All Star Game is on my birthday!
gwell,
You mean the 1/3 of all matches played? Sorry he was exciting to watch, but came in hurt, then got well and played a couple matches, got hurt, played a couple more and got hurt again. You can’t build a team around players who only can go 642 minutes of a 2700 minute season.
I do like ending our season at home with Colorado, hopefully we will have already won the RMC and qualified for the playoffs and it will be nice just to kick them around for 90 minutes.
I agree with keeptheSL. Get that bus rolling!

f4dence
He WAS exciting to watch, because he scored. Not given enough of an opportunity. There was a good chance he would have been injury free, or at least less injury ridden. He’ll have healed up during the long off season. Home field is grass now not turf = less turf games = less chance of injury. Letting Fabi go = mistake. Thats that.
Gwell is right about Fabi. Too bad he is supposedly gone…
gwell:
As a season ticket holder, I tend to just ignore f4dence’s comments since he just likes to argue no matter how weak his point is.
Fabi was great – he was exciting to watch and he could finish. It is very unfortunate that he went back to Argentina just before he would have played an entire season at Rio Tinto, he probably would have stayed healthy.
Oh well. Maybe we’ll see Johnson attack a bit more. THAT would be awesome! Another GOY?!
Go RSL!!
supposedly has nothing to do with it. he IS gone.
Any news on what team will make an appearance at the all star game?
